Living in Western Australia, we’re fortunate enough to have an abundance of national parks right on our doorstep. Perth is surrounded by several national parks, many of them being situated right here in Armadale and its neighbouring suburbs.
A trip to any of Perth’s national parks is great excuse to leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and get better acquainted with WA’s unique flora and fauna. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of WA by visiting one of its unique and diverse national parks.

Please be aware that entry fees do apply for the majority of national parks in Perth and WA. In order to keep the parks accessible, flora maintained and public facilities in good working order, a small fee is usually charged on entry. To pre-pray fees and obtain a park pass, visit the Perth Hills Armadale Visitor Centre and one of our friendly volunteers will be able to organise this for you and provide you with additional information and travel tips.
Wungong National Park
Wungong National Park is situated within the Darling Range, about 30km south east of Perth and only a short, 10-minute drive from the Armadale Shopping Centre.
This national park has been named one of the prettiest in WA and its close proximity to the CBD makes it the perfect escape for those wanting to explore the outdoors but not wanting to veer too far from Perth.
Visitors flock to this particular national park for the spectacular views of both the Perth cityscape and WA coastal plain. In addition to its views the park also boasts a dam and seasonal waterways, gorges, dramatic slopes, native bushland and tranquil picnic area beneath beautiful grove trees; it’s no secret why Wungong National Park is one of the most frequented in WA.
Wungong Gorge Walk
The Wungong Gorge Walk is one of the most popular walking trails in the Perth Hills, due to its scenic value. Walkers will pass through groves of trees, rocky outcrops and alongside running streams and beautiful valleys. The full walk begins near Wungong Dam and ends on the Southwest Highway but there are also a number of shortened walks available, that range in difficulty to accommodate hikers and walkers at all fitness levels.

Serpentine National Park
Serpentine National Park, home of the iconic Serpentine Falls, is one of the most frequently visited national Parks in WA and is well known in Perth for its scenic water features. Renowned for its waterfall and natural swimming pools, it’s no secret why this national park is a favourite summer hot spot among both locals and tourists.
After you’ve cooled off under the waterfall and swam in the dams, venture towards the grassed area and make use of the barbeque facilities and picnic tables. After lunch, take a walk through the woodlands and explore the parks sanctuary of plants and animals. Park visitors often encounter kangaroos during their visit, so keep your eyes peeled for sightings of our favourite furry friends.

Serpentine National Park is located 55 km south-east of Perth (26km south of Armadale), travelling time is approximately a 1.10hr drive from the CBD.
Opening hours:
Serpentine National Park is open from 8.30am - 5pm daily, including weekends and public holidays. However, this is a popular spot and the park often fills to capacity, especially during the busy summer months, to avoid disappointment we recommend to arrive before 11am on weekends. Please be aware that entry fees apply.
Kalamunda National Park
A visit to Kalamunda National Park makes for the perfect day trip, located a short 45-minute drive from the Perth CBD and situated within the picturesque Darling Scarp. Kalamunda National Park is best known for its woodlands and 375-hectare of diverse natural plants. That national park appeals to nature lovers who enjoy exploring the valley and its array of jarrah, marri, wandoo and butter gum trees. One of the biggest attractions of this national park is that it is home to some extremely rare species of plant, which exist nowhere else in the world.

Midgegooroo National Park
Midgegooroo National Park, formally known as Canning National Park, is located an hour east of Perth city.
Midgegooroo National Park is best known for its recreational facilities and is one of the most popular picnic sites in Perth, as people travel far and wide to relax in this scenic spot next to the Canning Dam.
Make use of the public facilities and plan a day out at Midgegooroo National Park. With wood fired barbecues (BYO wood), toilets, shaded picnic areas and grassed recreational areas, this national park has all the essentials required for a fun family day out or relaxed, outdoor social setting.

Midgegooroo National Park is located in Roleystone and the main picnic site can be accessed by McNess Drive or from Canning Dam Road, off Albany Highway (view in Google map).
